Stuff: 2011 BMW 5er World Premiere

[svgallery name="11_BMW_5er"] Story by John LeBlanc MUNICH, Germany - While here in Munich to drive the 2011 X1 cute-ute for the first time, BMW also trotted its next-gen 5 Series sedan, due in Canadian showrooms "around next June." Although the 2010 5 Gran Turismo hatch (set to go sale in December) previewed most of the new midsizer's engineering details (i.e. like in previous Fives, there's a lot of 7 Series nuts and bolts), BMW's approach with the new F10's looks is much more conservative than the previous 2003-2009 E60/61. More of an evolution of the 1995-2003 E39,  little of the last car's radical body forms have been retained. The new car's huge. But from a distance, it has the proportions of the current 3 Series. It's almost as if the last 5 Series didn't exist. For Canada, at launch next summer, we'll get rear-wheel-drive versions the top-of-the-range 400 hp, BMW 550i, and  the new 300 hp, single twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six  535i. Both will offer either a six-speed stick or BMW’s new eight-speed automatic.  Later next year, a 240 hp, BMW 528i will debut. Expect the requisite AWD versions and a twin-turbo V8 M5 to appear eventually. And what of an F10 Touring for Canada? Did I mention the 5 GT goes on sale next month?... Anyway, pics above, and first details below:
New 6th generation BMW 5 Series unveiled in Munich. The Perfect Symbiosis of Modern Design and Dynamic Performance. Whitby, ON – The world debut of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan marks the epitome of modern design and driving pleasure in the world of premium midsize sedans. Through its athletic and executive looks, driving dynamics typical of BMW, and innovative comfort and safety features, the generation of BMW’s 5 Series accurately reflects the standards upheld by the world’s most successful manufacturer of premium cars. Design: charismatic and athletic. With the longest wheelbase in the segment, a long and sleek hood, short overhangs, and a coupe- roofline, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan stands out clearly from the competition. Overall, the aesthetic looks of the car are achieved through balanced proportions. Design features emblematic of BMW are to be found at the front with its kidney grille inclined slightly forward, in the stylish and side view of the car, and at the muscular rear end. Within the interior, precise functionality and a fresh ambience come together in perfect harmony, unmistakable style, and clear orientation to the driver. Driving experience: benchmark dynamics and exceptional comfort. Highly advanced drivetrain and suspension technologies combine agile handling for the driver and a standard of riding comfort for passengers. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan features optional Adaptive Drive, which encompasses Driving Dynamics Control, Electronic Damper Control, and Active Roll Stabilization. Integral Active Steering will virtually extend or shorten the vehicle’s wheelbase for improved stability at high speeds and enhanced agility at lower speeds. At launch in June of 2010 (as a 2011 model year), the new BMW 5 Series Sedan will be available with one V-8 and one inline-6 gasoline engine. The top-of-the-range BMW 550i arrives with BMW’s “reverse-flow” V-8 engine featuring twin turbochargers and High Precision direct injection for maximum output of 400 hp. The new inline-6 of the BMW 535i features a twin-scroll turbocharger, High Precision direct injection, and, for the first time, VALVETRONIC throttle-less intake technology. It delivers a maximum output of 300 hp and 300 lb-ft. The 535i and 550i will be available with a choice of 6-speed manual transmission or BMW’s new 8-speed automatic transmission. Later in 2010, the BMW 528i will debut with a 240 hp inline-6 featuring lightweight magnesium-aluminum construction and VALVETRONIC throttle-less intake technology for efficiency and unparalleled responsiveness. Additional technical information, pricing and comprehensive product guides on the sixth-generation BMW 5 Series Sedan will be made available closer to market launch.
