2013 Frankfurt: Volkswagen unleashes its new-generation Golf R

VW Golf R FRT
By John LeBlanc As part of the continuing roll out of its seventh-generation compact family hatchback, Volkswagen has released details of the all-new Golf R just before its debut at next month’s Frankfurt auto show. While we Canadians had to wait until the third-generation R, the latest is actually the fourth iteration of the top-rung Golf model. As before, the new Golf R has been designed by Volkswagen R GmbH (think BMW M, or Mercedes-Benz AMG). A turbocharged, 2.0-litre four-cylinder gas engine returns. But with 296 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, the new Golf R is substantially more powerful than the 256 hp and 243 lb-ft. third-gen model that came to Canada, Combined with the standard Haldex all-drive system and a dual-clutch autobox (a six-speed manual is also available), Volkswagen says the new Golf R can scoot from 0 to 96 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. As it’s based on the new Golf, the is R lower to start with. Throw in a suspension even lower than the new GTI, and a new aero body kit, and the Golf R looks lower than a snake. One subjective grievance, however: The previous Golf R’s central tailpipes have been substituted for a less unique quad setup. Volkswagen didn’t release any interior shots, but the German automaker did say in a release that the new Golf R will get “textile seats with Alcantara bolsters” and optional Nappa leather, plus plenty of with carbon-fibre trim and R logos.
VW Golf R RR
After its debut at the Frankfurt show, the European Golf R will go on sale at the end of this year. With the new family of Canadian-market Golf/GTD/GTI not set to hit dealers until late spring in 2014, do not expect to see a Golf R here until 2015 sometime, if at all. By far, the new R is the most powerful Golf ever. And its AWD powertrain makes it a viable alternative to so-called “sports cars” in Canada, but with the practicality of the Golf hatch body. Knowing all of this, do you think VW Canada should import the new Golf R? Source: Volkswagen
