WARREN, Michigan – Below the sketches of ALMS and Speed Challenge racers plastered on the walls of the Cadillac design studio here at General Motors’ post-modern tech centre, the inspiration for its second gen M5 rival is obvious.

Debuting next week in Detroit, and available for sale next fall, Cadillac’s next CTS-V signature piece of hardware is a new 6.2-litre LSA supercharged V8 generating an estimated 550 hp and 550 lb.-ft. of torque.

Cadillac is also arming its latest super sedan with GM’s Magnetic Ride Control, an industry-first Performance Traction Management program, and either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Also included are six-piston front and four-piston rear Brembos and 19-inch Michelin Pilot Sport 2 summer rubber.

The original CTS-V Q-ship—and perennial Straight-Goods member—went on sale in 2004. The supercharged Cadillac STS-V and XLR-V were added in 2006.

Like last year's model, there are subtle exterior details to distinguish the CTS-V from the cooking CTSs.

The dihedral Cadillac grille is larger to enable more air intake and features a satin finish. The raised hood encompasses the supercharged engine, and new front and rear fascias help too.

Inside, 14-way adjustable Recaros include pneumatic bolster controls in the seat cushion and backrest. Of note: A microfibre material is added to the steering wheel, seats and shifter, eliminating suede’s inherent drawbacks of difficult care and moisture sensitivity.

Whether inside or out, the level of detail and craftsmanship exponentially exceed the old CTS and match the current model’s much higher standards.

Cadillac likes to boast all the members of its V-Series are all capable of zero-to-60 acceleration in less than five seconds.

Expect no less, or even better, from the new CTS-V.
