2010’s Top SUVs/CUVs under $50k

P1930663 By John LeBlanc Every year, the Toronto Star's Wheels section asks its contributors to scratch together a shortlist of what they think are the top new cars—as in what's available in showrooms, not just "new" for 2011—in various segments. Here are my picks for the Top SUVs/CUVs under $50k:

P1930656

Best: Mazda CX-9 ($37,995)

While you may think you need your family utility vehicle to have the ability to forge streams and climb the Rockies, most crossover/SUV buyers really just need an on-road-only minivan. Which the three-row seven-passenger CX-9 (with its stylish good looks, rich and classy-looking interior trimmings, and athletic road manners) can be, but without the I’ve-sold-my-soul-to-the-suburbs minivan image. As per Mazda’s sporty brand pretensions, the $37,995 to $47,450 CX-9 drives better than any minivan. Its steering is clear, definitive and linear, and its ride is well controlled, without the floatiness of a Ford Flex. The Mazda’s lone powerplant, a 3.7 L V6 engine with 273 hp, is merely adequate. Yet its six-speed automatic makes for a smooth marriage. The CX-9’s first two rows are roomy for five on long road trips. And with the final row folded, it can easily handle loads of stuff for a family of four or five. 2011_Audi_Q5_1

Next Best: Audi Q5 2.0T Quattro ($41,200)

If you don’t need the CX-9’s third row of seats or extra cargo room, the Q5 is the next best choice. Based on the Audi A4 sedan, it offers the slightly taller ride height and five-door utility customers are looking for, but with few driving compromises. This year, Audi added the torque-rich 2.0 L turbo four-cylinder to the Q5 repertoire. That drops its price a few thousands dollars ($41,200 to $45,300) and its fuel consumption numbers, compared to the optional V6. You still get the same gorgeous interior as you would in any Audi these days. And there’s decent rear-seat room.

Also consider:

Ford Flex ($35,499): Brings some style to its class; generous interior room; luxury-car ride; powerful-yet-fuel-efficient EcoBoost V6. Honda Pilot ($34,820): Lots of room for eight and cargo; can also handle some off-pavement driving adventures.
